Фильм рассказывает о том, как коллектив и парторганизация объединения «Ленполиграфмаш» исключила из партии одного из лучших станочников страны, лауреата Государственной премии СССР Г.А. Богомолова - «за неуплату членских взносов и потерю связи с парторганизацией».

В основе конфликта - неспособность и нежелание руководства и значительной части коллектива отказаться на деле от принципа уравниловки, и недобросовестность некоторых журналистов, «подливших масла в огонь».
